Focus Food: Agave

There’s a lot of research out there about how bad sugar – particularly refined sugar – is for you.  It can cause your blood sugar to spike, mood swings, inflammation and weight gain.

Agave nectar is a natural sweetener. You can find it in most grocery stores today. It is a particularly good substitute in drinks (not as good in baking – for that I suggest turbinado or cane sugar).

Of course limiting sugar intake is the best – but who doesn’t want a sweet treat on a holiday like Mother’s Day?

PEAKS & VALLEYS:

Valley

Driving back into the city after a weekend away, my husband asked, “how nice would it be to pull into a driveway right now?”  Instead we pull up to our building and have to double park, unload three sleeping kiddos and all our bags. We lug them up through the annoyingly well lit hallway an into our apartment where they collapse into bed.  One of us begins to unpack while the other returns the car to the garage. A small price to pay for a great weekend out of the city.

Peak

I went for a really tough run in the country on Sunday morning. It was one of the first nice mornings where I just needed a light jacket.  The sun was shining and this particular route takes me along a babbling brook, then a river, and has a super challenging uphill finish. Running, while hard, is so efficient and gratifying when I’m done.
