EXPERT’S CORNER

Dr. J is in…

One of the most striking, frustrating and endearing characteristics of many toddlers is their impressively strong drive for autonomy. When my daughter was about 21 months old, her favorite word became “Felf” as in “Zoe, it’s time for bed. Let us help you put on your pajamas.” She would inevitably respond, “No, FELF!” which was followed by 5 minutes of her struggling to put on her pjs, followed by her sleeping naked because she had to do it herfelf or no one could. Sometimes we get into the habit of intervening because we know how things will otherwise turn out and we just want things done quickly and ‘properly.’

Look for opportunities where instead you can step back and allow the natural consequences (i.e. sleeping naked because she is too stubborn to let her parents help her put on her pjs) be the teacher and guide.  When you choose to let things go, also choose to laugh.  This quest for independence is a healthy and important part of development.  While this stage can certainly be challenging, it can hopefully also be a source of fulfillment and humor.

RECIPE

Okra & Summer Squash

Apple

  • a few handfuls okra (or 1 medium zucchini) diced
  • 1 small yellow squash diced
  • 2-3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ripe garden tomato
  • 2T olive oil, salt & pepper

Directions

Okra contains vitamins A and C and is a good source of iron and calcium. It is abundant in the Queen City (see photo from the Charlotte Farmer’s Market below).  Also, some of the world’s most beautiful women, Cleopatra of Egypt and Yang Guifei of China loved to eat okra as well.  Okra photo

“Squeezers”

This is a product I currently can not live without.  My two year old calls them “squeezers”.  They are basically pureed fruits and veggies in the best container ever. No mess. Even my one year old can eat them by himself.  I’ll be the first to admit, they’re not the most cost effective snack, but they are super convenient and I feel good about them nutritionally.  We also like these try a few and see what your crew likes.

Make back to school fun

Here are three simple ways to make heading back to school special for you and your kids. Penned by yours truly on Healthnews.com.

PEAKS & VALLEYS:

Valley

I felt so badly about leaving my son in day care while I took the girls swimming early in the week, that I decided I could do it all by myself on Friday. It started off well. The pool is shallow and my two year old was staying on the slide, my one year old was in the water bouncy swing and my four year old recently passed her swim test. We were one of two families there so I also had the life guard’s full attention.

After a good swim, it was time to go and get some lunch. That’s when things took a turn for the worse.

As we got into the shower I realized maybe this was not such a good idea. My son was slipping on the tile floor so I had to hold him. Then my four year old gave my two year old her towel which she promptly thew on the shower floor. At this point there was no hope for me getting clean.

We headed into the locker room area. As I was trying to mange the three, get them dressed and block my son from walking back into the showers, an older woman in a nasty tone said, “Can’t you keep your towels out of the way?” I said, “I’m so sorry, I’m doing the best I can.” In my mind I was thinking, “What are you doing in the family locker room?!? There’s an adult only one two doors down the hallway!”

In the end, we got dressed and had a nice lunch and a long nap for my little guy so it was worth it.

Peak

After a full day exploring our new city, we were all starving. We happened upon a fabulous little pizza place called Brixx. Sitting there with the kids, enjoying a beer with my husband, and just relishing in a day spent together as a family. Bliss.
